Default Should I complete my comptia a+ or should I do the MCDST instead?

Should I complete my comptia a+ or should I do the MCDST instead?

I am planning a career change into IT, I've been self studying for the comptia A+ Certification and am about ready to book the actual exams but I now wonder if I should do a MCDST instead.

Am I right in thinking that the MCDST and comptia a+ cover similar ground?
Is it possible to self study for the MCDST and if so what books are recommended?
